Skylight blinds explained

Why put a blind on a skylight?

A skylight or rooflight lets in more light than any window in the house. That's great until the sun is overhead. Kitchens and extensions with a roof lantern can get too hot to sit in, the glare bounces off screens, and in winter the heat goes straight up and out.

A skylight blind sits across the opening, just under the glass. Closed, it takes the glare and heat off the room, keeps more warmth in during winter, and with blackout fabric makes a bedroom or office properly dark. Open, it tucks away into a slim headrail and you'd barely know it was there.

Skylights are usually out of reach, so most people go motorised. For smaller openings we can also fit a manual blind you open and close with a pole.

What we offer

Two ways to cover a skylight

Best for most skylights

Motorised skylight blinds

Honeycomb blinds with a quiet motor built into the headrail. Open and close them with a remote, a wall switch or your phone.

  • Up to 3m wide and 5m long on a single blind
  • Fitted flat or on a slope
  • Two or three blinds side by side for big lanterns
  • Solar, rechargeable battery or mains power
  • Works with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home through a smart hub
  • Blackout or dimout fabric in a wide range of colours

Smaller skylights

Manual skylight blinds

Blackout pleated blinds that run in a slim aluminium frame, with side channels to keep light from creeping round the edges. Opened and closed with a pole.

  • No motor, no power needed
  • Side channels for a proper blackout
  • Good for smaller rooflights in bedrooms and offices
  • Lower cost than motorised

The details

What you get

Glare and heat off the room

Close the blind when the sun is overhead and the room stays usable. Dimout lets soft light through, blackout shuts it out.

Warmer in winter

The honeycomb fabric traps a layer of air under the glass, which helps keep heat in the room instead of losing it through the roof.

Solar powered, no wiring

A small solar panel keeps the battery charged, so there are no cables to run and nothing to plug in. Battery and mains options too.

Remote, switch or phone

Control one blind or a whole group together. Add a smart hub to set timers or use your phone and smart speaker.

Neat side trims

Optional aluminium trims frame the opening, hide uneven edges and cut down light leaks. White, grey, anthracite or black.

Two-year warranty

Everything we supply and fit is covered for two years, including the motor, the controls and our fitting work.

Questions

Common questions about skylight blinds

Can you fit blinds to a flat rooflight or roof lantern?

Yes. Our skylight blinds are made for fixed flat rooflights, roof lanterns and skylight shafts. The blind runs across the opening on a track, so it works whether it's fitted flat or on a slope.

How big a skylight can you cover?

A single motorised skylight blind can be up to 3 metres wide and up to 5 metres long when fitted flat (4 metres on a slope). Bigger openings are covered with two or three blinds side by side, joined by a neat central bar.

How are motorised skylight blinds powered?

There are three options. A small solar panel that keeps the battery topped up, a rechargeable battery, or mains power. Solar and battery need no wiring at all. Mains power needs a fused spur, which has to be fitted by an electrician.

How do I control them?

With a handheld remote or a wall switch. Add a smart hub and you can use your phone, set timers, or use Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home. One remote can run a whole group of blinds together.

Will a skylight blind black the room out?

Blackout fabric blocks the light through the fabric, and optional side trims around the opening cut down the light that creeps round the edges. If you just want to take the glare and heat off, dimout fabric lets soft light through.

Do skylight blinds help with heat?

The fabric is a honeycomb, so each cell traps a layer of air. That helps keep heat in during winter, and takes the glare and some of the heat off the room in summer.

Can you fit a blind to a skylight that opens?

Our motorised skylight blinds are for fixed skylights and rooflights. If your skylight opens, tell us when you book and we'll talk you through what will work.

What warranty do skylight blinds come with?

Everything we supply and fit, including the motor, remote and our fitting work, is covered by our two-year warranty. Batteries are a consumable and aren't included.
