Wooden blinds explained
Wooden venetian blinds add warmth and texture that aluminium simply can't match. The slats tilt to control light and privacy, and the whole blind lifts out of the way when you want a clear view. Choose from different slat widths, tapes, stained and painted colour combinations to get exactly the look you're after.
There are two main types to consider. Real wood blinds are made from bass wood and come in a wide range of stained and painted finishes, with either ladder strings or cloth lift tapes. They suit most rooms but can be hard to clean and aren't ideal for moist conditions. Faux wood blinds are PVC with a realistic wood grain finish — wipeable, easy to clean, flame retardant and a sensible choice for kitchens, bathrooms and wet rooms.
Wooden blinds also work well in bay windows, whether angled or square. They're a practical and cost-effective alternative to wooden window shutters, giving a similar clean-lined look at a fraction of the price. Real wood has a more natural grain, greater variety in finish, and a slightly warmer look — but it can be affected by humidity. Faux wood is more moisture-resistant and generally more affordable, making it the better choice for bathrooms and kitchens.
Faux wood blinds can — they're designed to handle humidity without warping. Real wood can warp or crack in consistently humid environments, so we recommend faux wood for bathrooms and shower rooms.
Yes, we have a range of ladder tapes in different colours and weaves. Tapes cover the lift cords and add a decorative detail — they can completely change the character of the blind.
Wooden and faux wood blinds are tilted and lifted by cords which must be attached to your walls using cleats and cord tidies. We fit these as standard on every installation to keep cords out of reach of young children.
No. Wooden and faux wood blinds will warp or split in the very hot temperatures found in conservatories. 1 Stop Blinds will not install any type of wood or faux wood blind in conservatories or south-facing rooms which are likely to become hot. We'd recommend conservatory-specific blinds instead.
