Roman blinds explained

What are Roman blinds?

Roman blinds combine the practicality and versatility of blinds with the softness and luxury of curtains. Fabrics made into Roman blinds bring soft furnishings into a room where curtains might not be practical, creating a focal point with real colour and texture. They bring a warmth that roller or venetian blinds simply can't match.

Each blind is mounted with velcro tape on a bead cord operated headrail and pulls up into a series of neat folds lying one upon another. Lower it in stages to control the light, or bring it fully down to become a flat piece of fabric covering the window. The effect is clean and architectural, whether you choose a crisp plain linen or a richly patterned weave.

Blackout linings add the option of fitting Roman blinds in bedrooms where both light control and insulation matter. We have several ranges of Roman blind fabrics on display in our Bury St Edmunds showroom, and we bring samples to your home so you can see them in your own light. Roman blinds from our pattern books are sewn by machine to your exact measurements.

Roman blinds are simple to fit and operate and usually require no maintenance. All Roman blinds we supply comply with UK child safety legislation.

Questions

Common questions about Roman blinds

Do Roman blinds let in a lot of light?

Unlined Roman blinds allow a warm, diffused glow of light through the fabric when lowered. Adding a standard lining reduces this; a blackout lining blocks light almost completely. We'll help you choose the right option for each room.

Can Roman blinds be dry-cleaned?

Most fabrics are dry-clean or hand-wash — we'll advise based on your fabric choice at the time of ordering. It's worth noting care instructions before you choose a fabric, particularly for patterned or delicate weaves.

How much do Roman blinds cost?

Prices depend on size and fabric choice. Come to our showroom or book a free home visit and we'll give you an accurate quote on the spot — no obligation.

Are they suitable for bay windows?

Yes — each section of the bay gets its own Roman blind, all made to the same finished height so the overall effect is neat and intentional.

Should Roman blinds be fitted inside or outside the recess?

Both work well — it depends on the look you're going for. Inside the recess gives a clean, built-in finish and keeps the window frame visible. Outside the recess makes the window appear larger and covers more of the wall, which can look more dramatic. We'll talk you through the options during your free home survey.

Can Roman blinds be motorised?

They can. A small motor replaces the standard cord mechanism, so you raise and lower the blind by remote or from your phone. It's a good option for hard-to-reach windows or if you want cord-free operation throughout the house.

Are Roman blinds child-safe?

All Roman blinds we supply comply with UK child safety legislation. The cord mechanisms are enclosed and fitted with breakaway devices. If child safety is a particular concern, we can also fit motorised Roman blinds which eliminate cords entirely.
