How to Choose the Best Blinds for Your Home

So many options — where do you start?

If you’re looking at new blinds for your home, the sheer number of choices can feel overwhelming. Roller, Venetian, Roman, vertical, Perfect Fit, vision, motorised — they all do slightly different things, and the right pick depends on your room, your windows, and how you actually live in your home.

We’ve been fitting blinds across Suffolk for over 35 years, so we’ve seen pretty much every combination going. Here’s an honest rundown of the main types and what they’re best suited to.

Venetian blinds

Venetian blinds have horizontal slats that you tilt open or closed — giving you really precise control over light and privacy. They come in wood, faux wood, or aluminium, so there’s a finish to suit most interiors.

We find wooden Venetians work beautifully in living rooms and bedrooms where you want that warm, natural feel. Warmer wood tones and matte finishes have been especially popular lately — they pair well with the earthy, natural colour palettes people are drawn to right now. Aluminium ones are better for kitchens and bathrooms because they handle moisture without warping.

Roller blinds

Rollers are probably our most popular product. They’re clean, simple, and available in hundreds of fabrics — from sheer to full blackout. They roll up neatly out of the way when you don’t need them, and they look great in modern homes.

We make rollers in-house at our Eastern Way workshop, so we can cut them to any size. If you need blackout for a bedroom or a wipe-clean fabric for a kitchen, there’s a roller to do the job. Cordless spring mechanisms are increasingly popular too — they give a cleaner look with no chain hanging down.

Roman blinds

Romans give you that soft, elegant look — the fabric folds up in neat horizontal pleats when you raise them. They suit living rooms and bedrooms particularly well, adding a bit of warmth and texture that other blinds don’t quite match.

They’re made from cotton, linen, or polyester blends, and you can choose from a huge range of colours and patterns. Soft greens, warm neutrals, and textured linens are all proving popular for 2026. Just bear in mind that they’re fabric — so they’re not ideal for steamy bathrooms.

Vertical blinds

Verticals get a bit of a bad reputation, but the modern ones are a world away from the tired office blinds people picture. They’re brilliant for large windows and patio doors, where you need something that draws neatly to one side.

We manufacture vertical blinds in-house and can make a single track up to 5 metres wide — which covers most bi-fold and patio doors with a single wand control.

Vision blinds

Vision blinds (sometimes called day-and-night blinds) have alternating bands of sheer and solid fabric. When you adjust them, you can shift from filtered daylight to full privacy in seconds — one blind, three different looks depending on how you set it.

They’ve become one of the most requested products we fit. We manufacture them in-house at our Bury St Edmunds workshop, which means we can make them to any width and offer a wide range of fabrics. The look is modern and striking, but they work in traditional rooms too — especially in softer neutral tones.

What makes them so popular? They give you the light control of a Venetian without the slats, and the clean lines of a roller without losing the view entirely. We can add a pelmet for a more finished look, and they’re available motorised if you want them operated by remote or smart speaker.

Perfect Fit blinds

Perfect Fit blinds clip straight into your window frame — no drilling, no screws, no fuss. They’re ideal for uPVC windows, tilt-and-turn windows, bi-fold doors, and conservatories. Because they sit within the frame, they move with the window when you open it, and they look really neat and tidy.

They’re also completely cordless, which makes them one of the safest options if you’ve got young children.

Motorised blinds

Motorised blinds are controlled by remote, wall switch, or smart home systems like Alexa and Google Home. They’re available across most blind types — rollers, vision blinds, Venetians, and more.

The technology has come down in price quite a bit over the last few years. Five years ago motorised felt like a luxury. Now it’s a genuinely practical option, especially for hard-to-reach windows, conservatory roofs, skylights, and anyone with mobility limitations. Battery-powered motors mean no rewiring is needed — we just fit them in place of a standard mechanism.

They’re also the safest option for homes with young children, because there are no cords or chains at all.

How to choose the right blinds for each room

There’s no single “best” blind — it depends on the room:

  • Bedrooms — Blackout rollers or Venetians give you the darkness you need for a good night’s sleep. Motorised blackout blinds are worth considering if you want to close them from bed.
  • Living rooms — Romans, vision blinds, or wooden Venetians add warmth and character
  • Kitchens and bathrooms — Go for something moisture-resistant: aluminium Venetians, faux wood, or PVC rollers
  • Conservatories — Perfect Fit blinds handle the heat and glare without cluttering the frames. Side blinds in roller, vertical, or pleated styles give you extra privacy and light control.
  • Large windows and doors — Verticals or vision blinds draw across cleanly

Beyond the room, think about how much light you want, how much privacy you need, and what style fits your home. If you’re not sure, that’s what our home survey is for — we bring samples to you so you can see them against your own walls and windows.

Common questions

How do I clean my blinds? It depends on the type. A quick dust or wipe with a damp cloth works for most — we’ll talk you through care when we fit them. For a more detailed guide, have a look at our blind care and cleaning guide.

Can damaged blinds be repaired? Often, yes. Give us a ring and we’ll let you know whether a repair or replacement makes more sense.

Are blinds safe for homes with children? Absolutely — as long as you choose the right ones. Cordless, Perfect Fit, and motorised blinds are the safest options, and all the blinds we supply meet current UK child safety regulations. We’ve written more about this in our child safety guide.

Are motorised blinds difficult to set up? Not at all. Most motorised blinds we fit now are battery-powered, so there’s no wiring involved. We handle the fitting and programming — you just pick up the remote.
