What are roller blinds?
Roller blinds are about as straightforward as window blinds get — a single piece of fabric that rolls up and down on a tube. Simple as that sounds, they’re one of the most versatile blinds we make. We produce them right here at our Eastern Way workshop in Bury St Edmunds, so we can cut them to virtually any size.
They suit modern homes particularly well because of that clean, uncluttered look. When they’re rolled up, they practically disappear. When they’re down, you get a smooth, flat panel of fabric — no folds, no slats, just a neat finish.
Blackout, dimout, or sheer?
The biggest choice with roller blinds is the fabric opacity. There are three broad categories:
Blackout — These block out almost all light. They’re ideal for bedrooms, especially if you work shifts or have young children who need to sleep during the lighter evenings. We fit a lot of blackout rollers in nurseries and master bedrooms around Suffolk.
Dimout — A middle ground. Dimout fabrics reduce the light without making the room completely dark. They’re popular in living rooms and dining rooms where you want some privacy and sun protection but still want natural light coming through.
Sheer — Lightweight fabrics that let daylight filter in while stopping people from seeing straight into your home. They’re lovely in south-facing rooms where you want that soft, diffused light.

Why people love roller blinds
They’re versatile — There are hundreds of fabrics, patterns, and colours to choose from. Whether you want a bold print in a kitchen or a subtle neutral in a bedroom, there’s something that’ll work.
They’re low-maintenance — A quick wipe with a damp cloth is usually all they need. For kitchens and bathrooms, we’d recommend a PVC or vinyl fabric that you can easily keep clean.
They’re compact — When fully rolled up, they take up almost no space at the top of the window. That makes them a good choice for smaller rooms or windows where you don’t want the blind to dominate.
They work with motorisation — If you’ve got hard-to-reach windows or just prefer the convenience, roller blinds work brilliantly with motorised systems. You can control them with a remote, a wall switch, or even your phone.
Choosing the right roller blind
A few things to think about:
- Bedrooms — Go blackout. You’ll thank yourself when the sun rises at 5am in June.
- Kitchens — Choose a wipe-clean fabric. PVC or vinyl handles splashes and steam without staining.
- Bathrooms — Same as kitchens — moisture-resistant is key. Avoid fabric rollers in wet rooms.
- Living areas — Dimout works well here. You get privacy without losing that feeling of natural light.
- Children’s rooms — Blackout for sleep, and make sure the operating chain has a safety device fitted. Or go cordless/motorised for complete peace of mind.

A note on child safety
Under current UK regulations, any roller blind with a looped chain must have a safety breakaway connector and a wall-mounted chain tidy fitted at least 1,500mm from the floor. All the blinds we supply meet these standards as a matter of course. If you’d rather avoid chains altogether, cordless spring-operated or motorised rollers are the way to go.
Made and fitted locally
We make roller blinds from scratch at our Bury St Edmunds workshop. That means we control the quality from start to finish — the fabric, the mechanism, the finish. When we come to fit them, we know exactly how they’re built because we built them ourselves.
